PLEASE NOTE THAT OPAL GALAXY DO NOT SELL ANY OPAL DOUBLETS OR TRIPLETS. ALL OF THE OPALS THAT WE SELL ARE FULL, SOLID OPALS
Doublets
A man-made finished opal piece is known as an Opal Doublet. It consists of 2 layers, or a double layer of thin materials stuck together. The bottom layer of an opal doublet typically consists of backing materials like black opal potch or hard plastic, usually black in color, enhancing the colors and patterns of the thin opal slice affixed on top. Unlike solid opals, opal doublets offer affordability while still showcasing stunning patterns and colors, with the black potch backing enhancing their beauty. This is why crystal opal is the most usual type of opal used in opal doublets. It takes away the translucent visual aspect and enhances the brightness and colours in the crystal.
It is important for the care of your opal doublet to not expose it to chemical or excessive water. when cleaning. To clean simply use a slightly damp cloth. Excessive water or use of chemicals can damage the resin used to stick the doublet together. People often choose opal doublets for use in ring stones, earrings, and pendants where they do not want the back of the opal to be visible.
Triplets
An Opal Triplet is a composite opal piece consisting of three layers. The bottom layer, usually black opal potch or another material, enhances the colors and patterns of the thin opal slice fixed on top of it. A transparent top layer seals and protects the opal slice, often made of glass, quartz, or rigid plastic. Unlike doublets, triplets have an additional protective layer, making them more durable. However, some people prefer doublets for their visual appeal. To maintain opal triplets, it’s crucial to avoid exposing them to water, which could potentially damage the glue binding the layers together. Instead, gently clean them with a slightly damp cloth and refrain from using chemicals.
Opal triplets, favored by jewelers, provide an affordable alternative to solid opal stones due to their layered composition, offering a striking opal piece at a lower price. These triplets are readily found in most retail jewelry stores, catering to individuals with smaller budgets. Various jewelry settings feature opal triplets, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches, tie pins, and ring settings. Additionally, they have found utility in golf ball markers, putting pins, and souvenir keyrings.
