Why Opal Setting Requires a Specialist
Opal is a softer gemstone than diamonds, sapphires, or rubies. Setting an opal incorrectly can cause cracking, chipping, or color loss. Not every jeweler has experience with opal, and some standard setting techniques used for harder stones are not appropriate for opal.
When selecting a jeweler for opal setting work, we recommend asking specifically whether they have set opals before, what setting styles they recommend for the shape and size of your stone, and whether they offer a warranty on their craftsmanship. For everyday wear pieces such as rings, a bezel or rub-over setting provides the best protection for the stone.
Boulder opals, which retain their natural ironstone backing, are generally the most durable opal type for rings due to the added structural support of the host rock. Solid black opals and crystal opals set in rings benefit most from protective settings that shield the edges of the stone.
Setting Styles for Opals
Common setting options that work well for opals include bezel settings, halo settings with raised shoulders, and east-west bar settings. Claw settings can work for larger stones but leave the edges of the opal more exposed.
