Dark Opal for Sale
Dark opal is the lighter cousin of black opal. Same Lightning Ridge source, same untreated natural material, just a slightly paler background that gives a gentler contrast and a much more accessible price. If you want real Australian precious opal with serious color but you’re not ready for headline black opal prices, this is where to start. It’s also where we send most newcomers who message us asking what to buy first.

Real Lightning Ridge, not treated Ethiopian
This is the most important paragraph on this page. If you take one thing away, take this. A lot of the “dark opal” and “black opal” being sold cheaply online right now isn’t from Australia. It’s Ethiopian opal that’s been smoked, dyed, or treated with sugar acid to darken a naturally pale body. The treatment is convincing enough to fool most buyers who are only looking at photos. It’s also a different gem entirely. Treated Ethiopian wholesales for around ten dollars per carat. Real untreated Australian dark opal of comparable look sits at hundreds of times that.
Our dark opal is the real thing. Sourced direct from the same Lightning Ridge fields as our black opal (Grawin, Mulga, Coocoran, Allawah and others). Cut by us. Untreated.
Why it’s cheaper than black opal
The darker the natural background, the rarer the stone. That’s the rule that drives black opal pricing. Dark opal has a lighter natural background, which means more of it comes out of the ground at Lightning Ridge and the price drops accordingly. The fire on top can be every bit as bright as on a true black opal. You’re paying less for the background, not less for the color.
For most buyers who want vivid Australian opal without crossing into four or five figures, this is the answer.
If this is your first opal
Dark opal is one of the best first opals a buyer can own. The material is real. The opals are stable in jewellery. The price doesn’t make you nervous. And the color on a good dark opal will out perform plenty of stones at three times the price elsewhere. Dark Opal for Sale FAQs
Is dark opal actually from Lightning Ridge?
Ours is, yes. Same fields as our black opal. The only real difference is the natural background, which sits a shade lighter. Lighter background, gentler contrast, lower price. Same source.
What's the difference between dark opal and black opal?
The background of the stone. Black opal has the darkest natural body. Dark opal has a slightly lighter one. Everything else can be the same. Same colors on top, same patterns, same fire.
Is dark opal a good first opal to buy?
One of the best. Real Lightning Ridge material, stable enough for daily wear, certifiable, and at a price that doesn’t make a first purchase feel like a gamble. We send most newcomers here.
How do I tell if a "dark opal" listing is treated Ethiopian instead of real Australian?
Three checks. Look at the wording. Natural, solid, untreated, Lightning Ridge should be written explicitly. If those words aren’t there, assume it’s because the stone isn’t. Look at the price. Real Lightning Ridge dark opal does not sell for fifteen dollars per carat.ย
Will dark opal hold value the way black opal does?
At the very top end, fine black opal still leads on price appreciation. Dark opal isn’t bought for the same investment reasons. But it’s real Lightning Ridge opal, supply is tightening at the source, and a well chosen dark opal with bright fire is a stable thing to own rather than something that’s going to lose money on you. Treat it as something to enjoy first, with the comfort that you’re holding real material.
Can it be worn every day?
Yes, same care as any solid Australian opal. Thicker stones with a higher dome for ring settings. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and obvious impacts. Otherwise wear it.
