Matched Black Opal Pairs
A matched pair of black opals isn’t two stones that happen to look similar. It’s two stones cut from the same piece of Lightning Ridge rough, worked side by side to the same outline and dome, paired before either of them ever became a finished gem. The pairs on this page were identified as pair material in the rough and cut as pairs from the start. That’s how matching actually works in opal.

Why you have to buy a pair as a pair
Try this. Find a black opal you like online. Then go and find a second one that matches it. You won’t. Colour comes from the rough and rough is one of a kind, so once it’s been cut into a single stone the matching colour is gone for good. You can buy two stones that are vaguely similar and call it a pair, but anyone looking up close will see two singles dressed up. The pairs here came out of the same rough and read as the same family.
What we match on
Five things. Dominant fire colour. Strength of that fire. Pattern type. Outline shape. Size. Match all five and the result reads as a pair from across a room and side by side at close range. We don’t try to make them identical. Natural stones aren’t. But the small variations between two stones from the same rough look right.
Matched Black Opal Pairs FAQs
Are the two opals identical?
No. Natural opals are never identical. They match on dominant color, fire strength, pattern type, outline and size. From normal viewing distance they read as a true pair. Up close the small natural variations are part of what tells you both stones are real.
Why are pairs more expensive than two singles of similar size?
The rough that produces a matchable pair is rarer than rough that produces a single. And the cutter has to work both stones to the same dome, outline and weight rather than getting the most yield out of each one independently. The money is in the match.
What can pairs be used for?
Earrings most often. Cufflinks. Paired pendants or matching rings. Any design built around visual symmetry. Tell us what you’re making and we’ll point you at a pair that suits.
Can you cut a custom pair to brief?
If we have suitable pair material on hand, yes. Tell us the size range, dominant colour and shape and we’ll see what we can do.
