About Crystal Opals
Crystal opals display a wide variety of colors, including many of those found in a rainbow.
Crystal Opal encompasses all types of Opal, whether semi-black, white, or black, and features a body that is translucent, lucid, or semi-translucent.
This means that if you hold the opal up to a light source (such as a ceiling light or the sun) you will be able to see the light pass thru the opal.
Crystal opals are ‘see-thru’ opals that do not contain any potch either inside of them or on the back of them.
Crystal opal color and brightness are shown when the light is trapped inside of the opal.
We recommend setting it with a black or dark background.
Enabling the light to only enter the opal thru its face or front side enhances the beauty of it.
Using a closed in backing such as a bezel setting with iodised silver or oxidised (or lazered) gold will really help in showing off a crystal opals true beauty.

Australian Opals do not change their appearance after exposure to heat / climate / humidity / water.
An Australian Opal will not be damaged when exposed to light chemicals such as dishwashing detergent or hand soap. You should not however expose your opal to hasher chemicals such as bleach or ammonia.
They are however susceptible to cracking if knocked hard enough. If wearing your opal set in a ring you should always be careful that it is not knocked during physical activities.
If undertaking some form of sport or manual labour, please take off your ring or other opal jewelry so that it is not damaged.
Crystal Opals are transparent opals found in Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and other smaller mining towns including Mintabie and White Cliffs. Transparency in the opals means that if you shine a light to the opal, you will be able to see through it; the body tone of the opal is not solid.
